On May 26, 2026, the “Carbon Neutrality” Academic Forum of the School of Energy and Environment, Southeast University, was held in Room Y512, Jizhong Building. Professor Agis M. Papadopoulos from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, delivered a lecture entitled “The water-energy nexus and the utilization of renewable energy sources” for the School of Energy and Environment. The lecture centered on the relationship between water and energy under the growing challenge of water scarcity, and on the role of renewable energy in sustainable freshwater supply. Based on his work in renewable energy integration in buildings and urban environments, energy-saving technology assessment, and policy issues related to energy efficiency, Professor Papadopoulos analyzed the pressures facing arid and semi-arid regions such as the Gulf area and the Mediterranean basin. He discussed how climate change, population growth, tourism-driven demand, water-intensive agriculture, aging infrastructure, water losses, and political and economic constraints have intensified regional water stress. He also explored energy-efficient freshwater supply solutions supported by renewable energy systems.
The lecture deepened the School’s understanding of the integrated development of water resources, energy systems and low-carbon transition.
